MINI Challenge
15 November 2011MINI Challenge Spain: Suria, Reyes champs.
Marta Suria and Luis Miguel Reyes are the new number one in the MINI Challenge Spain. The season drew to a close with a dramatic second race at the Monteblanco circuit.
The first race of the event saw Bruno Méndez drive his way into the hearts of the fans as he launched attack after attack on the leading Reyes, with Reyes defending brilliantly. After the change of driver, Reyes' team-mate Marta Suria continued to hold off the opposition to hang on to second place.
The crucial moment came in the second race, when Méndez, embroiled in a battle for fourth place, left the track whilst defending an attack from Javi Villa. In doing so he damaged his MINI John Cooper Works Challenge to such an extent that he was unable to continue.
That left the way free for Suria and Reyes to comfortably win the race and pick up the points needed to secure the overall title. 276 points saw them crowned the new MINI Challenge Spain champions, replacing last year's champs Villa and José Manuel de los Milagros.
Six guest drivers from Germany also participated in the final round in Spain while Max Partl had the best finish of them all with a third place in the second race. "Our cars ran very well throughout the weekend. Not too bad," said Partl. Not too bad was also the evening party with all teams going full throttle again to celebrate the finale in style.
Reyes celebrated "a fantastic season" after the presentation ceremony. "This year started very well and we were able to maintain our effectiveness and complete the result." Suria also had every reason to celebrate: "It was an extraordinary year. We managed a very good pace in every race until this last one in Monteblanco, where everything was perfect."
